Polygon zkEVM Withdrawal Urgency — Assessment
Published 6/15/2026, 10:34:04 PM
Short answer: Only if your assets are locked in smart contracts (DeFi, bridges, multisigs). EOA-held assets are already migrated and safe until December 31, 2027.
What Is Actually Happening
Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta's sequencer is scheduled to shut down on July 1, 2026 (approximately 16 days from mid-June 2026). The announcement was made publicly by Polygon Labs and confirmed by the ecosystem, including QuickSwap.
However, the situation splits into two very different risk profiles:
Asset Type Matters — Not All Withdrawals Are Equally Urgent
| Asset Location | Status | Deadline | Action Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| EOA wallets (assets you hold directly in a personal wallet) | ✅ Automatically migrated to Ethereum L1 | Claimable until Dec 31, 2027 | Visit ui.agglayer.dev to claim — no rush |
| Smart contracts (DeFi protocols, bridges, multisigs, liquidity positions) | ⚠️ Cannot be automatically migrated | July 1, 2026 (sequencer shutdown) | Withdraw now — this is the urgent one |

The "Rush" Claim Is Overstated for Most Users
The claim that all Polygon zkEVM users face material risk of fund loss is partially misleading:
- EOA holders: No urgency. Assets are already on Ethereum L1 and sit behind a claim portal with a ~18-month runway (until Dec 31, 2027). There is no risk of permanent loss from a timing perspective.
- Smart contract holders: Genuine urgency. If you had assets deployed in QuickSwap, Stargate, or any other protocol on Polygon zkEVM, those positions are at risk of permanent loss once the sequencer stops.
What the Evidence Does NOT Confirm
| Claim in circulation | Verdict | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Polygon CEO cited "EIP-4844 delays and ZK counters" as shutdown reasons | Unverifiable | The sunsetting decision is confirmed; specific technical cited reasons are not independently found in sources. [Note: not independently confirmed] |
| "No funds will be lost" — absolute guarantee | Contested | True for EOA funds; false for smart contract-held assets per Polygon's own documentation, which states those cannot be automatically migrated. |
| "Forced transactions permanently enabled" during transition | Unverifiable | [Note: not independently confirmed] |
Bottom Line
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Should everyone rush to withdraw? | No — EOA assets are safe on Ethereum. |
| Should DeFi/smart contract users rush? | Yes — withdraw before July 1 or lose access. |
| Is Polygon PoS affected? | No — completely separate network. |
| Where to claim migrated EOA assets? | ui.agglayer.dev |
What Remains Open
- The specific technical reasons (EIP-4844, ZK counters) cited for the shutdown are not independently confirmed from public sources.
- The total value locked in smart contracts at risk is unknown from the available data.
Suggested Next Steps
- Check your wallet history for any assets ever bridged to Polygon zkEVM — if sitting in EOAs, claim at the portal before Dec 2027 (low urgency). If in DeFi protocols, withdraw immediately.
- Verify active positions on Polygon zkEVM (via the Onchain tool) to identify any smart-contract exposures before the July 1 deadline — this is the actionable priority.
