Helius's Light Protocol Acquisition: Reshaping

Published 6/11/2026, 8:18:52 AM

On June 10, 2026, Helius—the dominant RPC and blockchain infrastructure provider on Solana—announced the acquisition of Light Protocol, a Solana privacy startup founded in 2021. The move aims to build what Helius calls the "canonical privacy layer" for Solana, returning Light Protocol to its original mission of enabling programmable privacy on the network.

Technical Foundation: ZK Syscalls and ZK Compression

Light Protocol's most significant technical contribution to Solana was authoring the blockchain's original zero-knowledge (ZK) syscalls—work that was technically impossible before their efforts. These include:

  • sol_poseidon hash function syscall
  • sol_alt_bn128_group_op and sol_alt_bn128_compression syscalls (altbn G1 pairings, additions, multiplications, and G1/G2 compression)

As Helius noted: "Every zero-knowledge app on Solana, including projects that today compete in the privacy category, runs on or is influenced by the work Light spearheaded and delivered."

After shipping these syscalls, Light Protocol pivoted to solve Solana's account state problem by building ZK Compression, co-developed with Helius and launched in 2024. This technology reduces onchain state storage costs by up to 1,000x (99% reduction), with mint account creation costs reduced by 200x and token account creation costs reduced by ~100x. The technical architecture uses Groth16 SNARK with constant proof size of 128 bytes, storing only state root fingerprints on-chain while keeping the actual data off-chain.

Strategic Rationale: Privacy as the Missing Piece

Helius founder Mert Mumtaz framed the acquisition in stark terms: "Crypto without privacy is not crypto. Just as HTTPS made the HTTP internet safe and scalable for global commerce, privacy will do the same for blockchains. Solana has a huge ecosystem, is the fastest chain in existence, but will never scale unless privacy is taken as a PO priority."

The strategic logic centers on institutional adoption barriers. Traditional financial institutions (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan) require transaction confidentiality—current public blockchains expose all trades, balances, and counterparties.

By acquiring rather than partnering with Light Protocol, Helius gains full control over the development roadmap and can integrate ZK privacy tooling directly into existing RPC and indexing services.

Light Protocol CEO Jorrit Palfner added: "Privacy is the single most important primitive we can build and scale on Solana. Joining Helius means we get to finish what we started with the engineering depth, institutional trust, and distribution to make privacy the default."

Planned Privacy Features

The unnamed privacy protocol will offer:

  • Encrypted balances
  • Encrypted payments
  • Encrypted markets
  • Full auditability and configurability
  • Selective disclosure capabilities for institutions and startups
  • Programmable and configurable for both retail and institutional use cases

Developer access is planned to open in the coming months.

Competitive Landscape

The acquisition positions Helius/Light against other privacy projects on Solana:

ProjectApproach
Helius/Light ProtocolZK Compression, returning to privacy
Arcium (formerly Elusiv)Multiparty Computation eXecution Environments (MXEs)
Dark ProtocolFutarchic privacy protocol, decentralized governance

Notably, the total ZK market cap stands at approximately $11 billion, yet no top ZK players currently support Solana—the second largest blockchain ecosystem—creating a significant market opportunity.

Risks and Considerations

  1. Regulatory Gray Zone: Privacy technology on public blockchains sits in constant regulatory flux; Tornado Cash's legal saga demonstrated privacy tools can attract unwanted regulatory attention.

  2. SDK Sunset: Light Token SDK features are being sunset as part of the acquisition's strategic realignment—existing users and integrations may face disruption during the transition.

  3. Developer Adaptation: Developers who built on Light Protocol's standalone tooling will need to adapt to Helius's packaging of capabilities.

  4. Current Limited Adoption: Light Protocol v1 has only 2,000+ users and approximately $1.5 million in total value shielded—organic growth with minimal marketing. Scaling this to enterprise-level adoption remains an open question.

Conclusion

The acquisition consolidates ZK expertise under Helius's infrastructure umbrella, potentially accelerating privacy infrastructure development on Solana. By integrating Light's syscalls with Helius's distribution and infrastructure, the combined entity could make privacy a first-class citizen on Solana—enabling private DeFi, payments, and tokenization while solving Solana's state growth problem through ZK Compression. However, specific acquisition terms remain undisclosed, and the actual privacy capability improvements lack quantified metrics—the current v1 adoption base is small, and scaling to institutional-level usage depends on execution, regulatory developments, and developer adoption.

Suggested Next Steps

  1. Monitor the developer access launch — The planned opening of developer access in the coming months will be a key signal for adoption potential. Consider setting a schedule to check for updates.

  2. Track institutional adoption signals — Given the focus on removing institutional adoption barriers, monitoring whether any major DeFi protocols or financial institutions integrate the new privacy primitives would provide concrete evidence of material impact.
