How the Money Account Works

MetaMask's Money Account, launched in June 2026, is a self-custodial financial platform built on the Monad blockchain. It allows users to maintain a single balance of mUSD (MetaMask USD) that simultaneously earns DeFi yield and remains available for real-time spending via a linked Mastercard.
How the Money Account Works
The product eliminates the friction of "topping up" a card by allowing the MetaMask Card to authorize transactions directly against a user's yield-bearing DeFi positions.
| Component | Provider / Detail | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Stablecoin | mUSD (via Bridge/Stripe) | A 1:1 USD/Treasury-backed reserve asset used for all transactions. |
| Yield Engine | Veda & Steakhouse Financial | Automated vaults that route funds into DeFi protocols like Morpho. |
| Network | Monad | High-speed L1 with 800ms finality, enabling instant card authorizations. |
| Card Partner | Mastercard | Provides the global payment rail for the MetaMask Card. |
| Custody | Self-Custodial | Users retain control of their private keys throughout the process. |
Yield Mechanism
Instead of sitting idle, funds in a Money Account are automatically deployed into curated DeFi lending markets.
- Yield Source: Funds are managed by Veda smart contract vaults, which currently utilize Morpho (with plans to expand to Aave).
- Returns: Users earn a variable APY of up to 4%, which accrues in real-time directly to the account balance.
- Cashback: Eligible purchases earn up to 3% cashback in mUSD, which is immediately deposited back into the account to begin earning yield.
Spending and Accessibility
The Money Account bridges the gap between on-chain assets and real-world commerce through several key features:
- Real-Time Authorization: Because the account is on Monad, transaction finality is fast enough to support standard point-of-sale speeds without requiring a custodial middleman.
- Gasless Experience: MetaMask sponsors the network gas fees for Money Account users, making the blockchain backend invisible to the end user.
- KYC Requirements: While holding mUSD and earning yield is permissionless, KYC is mandatory to access the MetaMask Card and fiat on/off-ramp services.
Clarification on "Fere Earn"
Research indicates that "Fere Earn" is not an official component of the MetaMask Money Account. The yield infrastructure is powered exclusively by Veda and Steakhouse Financial. The term may be a confusion with MetaMask's legacy "Stablecoin Earn" feature or a separate third-party service.
Risks and Limitations
- No FDIC Insurance: Unlike traditional bank accounts, the Money Account is not government-insured.
- Smart Contract Risk: Users are exposed to potential vulnerabilities in the underlying DeFi protocols (Morpho/Aave) and the Veda vault architecture.
- Geographic Restrictions: The service is available globally but excludes the UK, EU, and sanctioned jurisdictions.
